These “Four Thoughts” are considered to be the inner mental prerequisite to the further 4 practices of the so-called “Ngöndro Practice”, the “Preparatory Exercises” for the practice of the Mahamudra path, which can then either be deepened as a path of mind-rest and insight meditation, or can be transferred into the practice of Vajrayana deity practices.
But even independently, these “Four Thoughts…” are fundamental to the Buddhist view of things, namely that
human existence is precious and can be used as a path of inner awakening,
but that it is also extremely transient and passes more quickly than one would wish,
much of life is based on the principle of ethical cause and effect (karma),
existence is not a guaranteed feel-good affair, but everything here carries an aspect of suffering (dukkha) and imperfection.
Looking at this again and again can contribute to a more realistic assessment of our existential situation and “inoculate” us for encountering the vicissitudes of life, the undesirable experiences, and motivate us to align our life path with the “Dharma”, the teachings and practices for the spiritual path of awakening, thus contributing to inner stability.
During this weekend, Lama Kelzang will explain and illustrate these Four Thoughts in his inspiring and humorous way, thus “reflecting on them together” with the participants, which will contribute to a kind of “contemplative meditation experience”.
