Apart from a formal meditation practice, the practice of patience is the best practice in all everyday situations.
Meditation sessions can train our minds so that we become more able to be patient in all circumstances, including difficult experiences.
Patience in dealing with undesirable and distressing situations is a true sign of meditative training. The practice may begin at the meditation seat, but the true applications of patience are in the arenas and battlefields of life.
From a Buddhist perspective, patience means, above all, the ability “not to go crazy”.
Old writings such as Gampopa’s Precious Jewel of Liberation or Shantideva’s Entering the Path of Awakening describe “patience” primarily as the mental power not to fall into anger, rage and resentment, but to always want to learn something beneficial for the path of awakening even from adverse circumstances.
It is the capacity for unconditional peacefulness that does not allow itself to be incited to aggressiveness by others. It lets us make wiser decisions, rather than be rash and driven by our emotions, and will improve our communication with others.
Thus meditation experiences of calmness of mind and compassion can stand the test of time in life and enrich our relationships with others and our life tasks with the virtue of patience, the 3rd paramita, and make us a fellow human being loved and appreciated by others.
In this course, Lama Sönam will not teach from a set text, but will teach the healing practice of patience as his own heart teaching, guiding appropriate meditations. He will show the participants of the course ways to lead a better life through the practice of patience.
